Context

The travel application offers a comprehensive and personalized trip experience, from booking tickets and accommodations to crafting individualized itineraries by letting users enter their preferences to receive ideal trip suggestions.

Problem
  • Fragmented planing and booking: average traveler spends 53 days visiting 28 different websites over a period of 76 online sessions in order to plan and book a trip
  • Travelers have to figure out their own way to navigate through each country as each country has it’s unique infrastructure
  • Lack of trip customization
  • Main tourist attractions are over visited and travel experience is not as personal anymore
Objective
  • To develop an inclusive app catering to diverse travelers, facilitating seamless bookings for accommodations and tickets, while offering personalized trip options tailored to individual budgets
  • To educate travelers by giving tips about a country
  • To help travelers connect to each other and share experiences together
  • To inspire travelers to explore beyond main tourist attractions

Understanding the user

In the initial stage of product design, I conducted extensive user research through surveys, interviews, and observational studies to gain insights into user needs and behaviors. Based on this research, I created personas to represent different user segments, helping to empathize with their perspectives. Then, I defined problem statements to articulate the key challenges users face. Finally, I developed user journey maps to visualize the user experience, identifying touchpoints and pain points for optimization. This holistic approach ensured a deep understanding of the user.

Key learnings

  • 75% or more of millennials surveyed in each country say they prefer to create their own itinerary , rather than leaving it up to a packaged tour.
  • Majority of millennials polled say that discovering hidden local places is more important to them than visiting major tourist attractions
  • Nearly 60% of millennials polled say they are looking more for an adventure when they travel, as opposed to decompressing
  • Meeting lots of people when they travel is more important than bringing back souvenirs
Creating concept

After identifying the audience I've created the goal statement for the app: "Faraway will let users make all bookings and plan their trips at 1 place which will affect busy working individuals who don’t have much time in hand by letting users set their preferences, date and location and receive ideal trip suggestions. We will measure effectiveness by tracking trips booked though the app"

To craft the design concept, I first developed future state user flow and information architecture. This involved planning the journey users would take through the app and organizing the structure of information to ensure optimal usability. These steps were essential in mapping out the key features of the app, setting a solid foundation for the design process.

Starting the design

To initiate the design process, I began by carefully selecting the brand's colors and establishing a consistent tone of voice to reflect its personality.

Additionally, I laid down the foundational elements for the design system, ensuring cohesion and scalability across all components.

Once these groundwork tasks were completed, I delved into the actual creation of the designs.

Usability study

I conducted a usability study involving a group of five users to thoroughly evaluate various aspects of the app, including navigation, language, and more. Here are some key findings  from the testing process:

  • Some users expressed a strong desire for activities that are inclusive and cater to individuals with disabilities.
  • The current design overlooks the needs of adventurers who travel with pets.
  • Although the trip is customized to a high degree, users would appreciate having the option to modify the itinerary if necessary.
Next steps

After carefully evaluating the results of the usability testing, I made several adjustments to the designs in order to better align with the feedback received.

Moving forward with the project, my next priority will be to expand the number of user flows and engage in a process of ongoing iteration to further refine and enhance the user experience.
